Senior Prize Recipients Announced

Buttenwieser Prins Prize awarded to Dorothy Walter

The Art Department has awarded the Buttenwieser Prins Prize to Dorothy Walter whose academic record is distinguished by her commitment to excellence in her studies (as evidenced by her very high grade point average in art history). Her senior thesis on Rembrandt is a significant contribution to the field. Dorothy’s senior paper explored the complex blend of artful technique and interpretive imagination in the nocturnal etchings that display his handling of dark tonalities.

Frances Daly Fergusson Prize awarded to Rebecca Rice and Vanessa Beloyianis

Rebecca Rice for excellence in her academic work (as demonstrated by her very high grade point average in art history). Her senior thesis on French history painting and Napoleonic propaganda was an outstanding essay executed with graduate level research skills. Her undergraduate curriculum has also shown great breadth of interest and seriousness with coursework in economics and political theory.

Vanessa Beloyianis for her commendable senior thesis on the architect Eero Saarinen at Vassar College (1954-1958). Vanessa wrote a definitive history of Saarinen’s activity at the College although the main focus of her study was Noyes Hall (celebrating its 50th anniversary this year) . During work on the thesis she was able to locate the original Saarinen model for Noyes (then in the basement of Main). This model is now at the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center undergoing restoration and will be exhibited in 2009.

Rubenstein Prize awarded to Kate Parvenski

The Rubenstein Prize winner for the Studio program is Kate Parvenski. Kate Parvenski has done singularly outstanding work with her accomplished and inventive sculpture. In its playful use of materials and its inherent mystery, her sculptures are formally charged and evocative.
